Employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision participated in a training organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).
The training was held in Istanbul, Türkiye, within the framework of the GEF Black Sea Project.
Within the training course, the use of modern technologies in fisheries control was discussed, as well as measures to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Participants also visited the Fisheries Control Center in Marmara.
At the training, Georgia was represented by Irakli Chavchanidze, Head of the Black Sea Convention Division of the Environmental Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture; Gocha Gujabidze, Head of the Poti Unit of the Black Sea Convention Division; and Maia Chkhobadze, Head of the Biodiversity Control Service.
The information obtained during the training held in Türkiye, as well as the experience shared by international partners, is important for the prevention of illegal and unreported fishing in Georgia, and for the use and implementation of modern technologies in fisheries control.
In addition to Georgia, representatives from Türkiye, Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine attended the training.
It is noteworthy that, since 2015, Georgia has been a cooperating non-member country of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).
