The Department of Environmental Supervision identified a case of illegal fishing at the Zhinvali Reservoir
Employees of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Regional Division of the Environmental Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified a case of poaching in Dusheti Municipality.
A citizen was carrying out fishing on the Zhinvali Reservoir from a motorized boat using prohibited fishing gear - a gillnet and a fish trap.
The use of gillnets in amateur and sport (non-licensed) fishing constitutes criminal liability; therefore, the case materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further response.
According to Article 300 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, illegal fishing using prohibited gear is punishable by community service for a term of 320 to 400 hours and/or imprisonment for a term of two to four years.
The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of illegal fishing, hunting, and other environmental violations. In addition, they provide immediate responses to all reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline (153).
