The Department of Environmental Supervision has identified an illegal sawmill in the Imereti region
Employees of the Environmental Supervision Department under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified a violation in Samtredia Municipality. The offense was detected by staff of the Department’s Western Regional Division.
In the village of Tkhilagani, a citizen had illegally installed an unregistered circular-type sawmill in the yard of a residential house.
In the adjacent area, there were also two round alder logs and 0.5 cubic meters of primary processed timber.
As the case contains elements of a criminal offense, the materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further action.
The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of illegal logging and other environmental violations. Immediate action is taken in response to every report received through the Ministry’s hotline (153). As a result, in the first three months of the current year alone, up to 50 cases of illegal forest use have been identified in the Imereti region.
Within the framework of combating illegal forest use, the Department actively employs modern technologies. Sanctions have also been tightened. As a result of all these measures, a decline in cases of illegal forest use has been observed in recent years.
