The Department of Environmental Supervision has identified a case of illegal fishing using an electric device in the Mtkvari River
Employees of the Shida Kartli Regional Division of the Department of Environmental Supervision under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture have identified cases of illegal fishing on the Mtkvari River.
In the city of Gori, individuals illegally harvested more than 31 kilograms of fish from an inflatable boat using an electric device. Additionally, a citizen illegally fished with an electric device near the village of Khidistavi in Gori Municipality, harvesting approximately 1 kilogram of fish. The offender threatened and resisted the Department’s employees, and an official investigation is currently underway.
Fishing using an electric device constitutes a criminal offense. The case materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further action
Electric fishing devices pose a threat to human life and health. The manufacture, purchase, possession, carrying, transport, shipment, or sale of such devices is punishable by law.
Combating poaching remains a top priority for the Environmental Supervision Department. The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of illegal fishing, hunting, and other environmental violations. In addition, they provide immediate responses to all reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline (153). As a result, in 2025, employees of the Shida Kartli Regional Division identified 57 violations of fishing regulations.
